The
Hebrew word “yom” ( יוֹם ) and the
English word “Day”
There are Five [¡] possible interpretations of the Hebrew word ‘yom’ ( יוֹם ),
There are Five [¡] possible interpretations of the Hebrew word ‘yom’ ( יוֹם ),
1) a period of light,
2) a period of 24 hours,
3) a general, vague very long period of time,
4) a point of time, and
5) a year
Let
us begin with a look at Genesis Chapter One, verses 1 through 31, ESV
translation.

the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without
form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of
God was hovering over the face of the waters.

And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 And God saw that the
light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the
light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there
was morning, the first day.

let us take a look at how the above chapter, Genesis 1, and the two examples of
verses from Exodus, Exodus 20:11 & 31:17, read if we A – replace “day” with
– “a period of light, or Period of Light”; B – replace “day” with – “a point of
time”; C) replacing the word (words) day / days with – a general, vague very
long period of time and D replacing the word (words) day / days with – a year.
First, A) – Using the ESV as the basic

let’s briefly look at the use of the English words, “a period of light”, “a

can be seen, the arbitrary swapping of various English words, phrases or
statements, for the Hebrew word ‘yom’ ( יוֹם ), results in rendering the text
virtually unreadable, and meaningless.
So, what’s the point of highlighting these variances in meaning? Simple, the Hebrew word ‘yom’ ( יוֹם ), as
with many other Hebrew words, and even with many English words, is context sensitive. Consider the English words, “wind”, “bow” “live”
or “read” cannot be arbitrarily, or even readily, defined or assigned meaning,
in the absence of “CONTEXT”. Thus, the
whole the point about the Hebrew word, "yom" ( יוֹם ) as presented in
Genesis Chapter One and Exodus Chapters 20 & 31, is that neither can the Hebrew
word, "yom" ( יוֹם ) be arbitrarily, or even readily, defined or
assigned meaning, in the absence of “CONTEXT”!
The
Hebrew word “yom” ( יוֹם ), formed
with the Hebrew letters Yod ( יְ ), Nun ( וֹ ) & Semek ( ם ), reading from
right to left, and pronounced “yome”, similar to the English word “Day”,
can have several very reasonably applied meanings, inferences and implications.
Context
is KING!
“No
Jesus, NO peace” and yet, “Know Jesus, KNOW peace”
How
does one get to “know” Jesus? Simple,
invite Him into your heart, as Jesus says: “Here I am! I stand at the door and
knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with
him, and he with me.” [Revelation
3:20 NIV] How can be assured that this Jesus stuff
means anything? Well because the Bible
tells us so, as the Apostle Paul wrote:
“If
you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that
God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart
that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess
your faith and are saved.” [Romans
10:9-10 NIV]
And
for those of you who say to me, I can’t be bothered reading the Bible, “it’s
confusing” or “it’s a waste of my time”, may I draw your attention to what the
Bible says about wisdom: “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and
knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” [Proverbs 9:10 NIV]

whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
