Day Eighty-four of Eighty-four:

“The Memo”

The saints still grieved, N' shocked and perplexed... the demons dancing with glee & crying:

"Your King of kings, that blasphemer the 'son of god' is dead. Your holy 'messiah's' rotting corpse has been decaying for days. And has been, now, for almost Three Full days, and Three Full nights... sucker!"

It's 7:01:30 o'clock pm, in Jerusalem, the eternal Capitol of Eretz Yisroel, (that’s 9:01 am on the West Coast of America, Pacific Time) on Saturday night. Jesus the Christ / Yeshua Ha Mashiach (Rabbi Yeshua bar Yosef) was crucified, died and buried just over 72 hours (Three Full days, and Three Full nights) ago. Official sunset (marking the end of Shabbat / Sabbath) was two minutes, and 30 seconds ago...

This is, by all sound definitions, the very earliest part of the First Day of the week. There was a peculiar rumbling noise, an earthquake, accompanied by a sudden flash? No... that's not quite it... there it is again... a rumble, and a flash of light, beyond intense, illuminating the entire Universe in a bold, but brief, flash...

The stone's been rolled, and He is Alive! - Mark 16:9.

And that right there ^ ^ ^ that, my friends, is… GOOD NEWS!

“No Jesus, NO peace” and yet, “Know Jesus, KNOW peace”

How does one get to “know” Jesus? Simple, invite Him into your heart, as Jesus says: “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.” [Revelation 3:20 NIV] How can be assured that this Jesus stuff means anything? Well because the Bible tells us so, as the Apostle Paul wrote:

“If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.” [Romans 10:9-10 NIV]

And for those of you who say to me, I can’t be bothered reading the Bible, “it’s confusing” or “it’s a waste of my time”, may I draw your attention to what the Bible says about wisdom: “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” [Proverbs 9:10 NIV]

If nothing else, PLEASE read two chapters from the Bible – (don’t own one, sorry NO excuse, if you’re reading this, you can access this: http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John%203:16&version=NIV) John 3 and John 14!

John 3:16 says: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

And John 14:6 says: “Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Day Eighty-three, Friday, henceforth now dubbed - "The Shopping Day"

Incarnation to Resurrection roughly three and one-half years, in 12 weeks, Sunday through Friday (six days) per week

Day Eighty- three of Eighty-four:

On this day* (tradition doesn’t really even address, let alone say very much about this day*. It is, simply put, a day just not really talked about, so I’ll call this “The Shopping Day” *). Sometime between the first and twelfth hours (the hours of 6:00 o’clock am and 6:00 o’clock pm) some c.~ One Thousand Nine Hundred Ninety-one (+/- six) years ago, the Lord Jesus the Christ / Yeshua Ha Mashiach (Rabbi Yeshua bar Yosef) after suffering endless torture, and even death, His human physical body rests in a tomb. The dead body of the Lord Jesus was placed in this tomb following a very lengthy bout of torture and abuse, including the anguish of hours hanging on a cross, “the crucifixion”, on what is classically referred to a “Good Friday” **. And I’m positively sure, “The saints absolutely were still shocked and perplexed…”.

Mark 16:1 alone describes how three ladies, two fairly well known, and one perhaps not-so-well-known - Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome - after the Sabbath had ended, went and purchased burial spices, oils and ointments to anoint the Lord's body. Looking to Luke 23:56 we read of these same ladies that - “…they then returned and prepared spices and ointments… But… by the time they had finished preparing the burial spices, oils and ointments Sabbath was beginning, so… they rested as required by the law”.

It is interesting to note that New Living Translation for Mark 16:1 says - “Saturday evening, when the Sabbath ended, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome went out…” - though it’s not really my place to, as a layman with only an Associates Degree, to argue with Scholars who hold Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD’s, I must say… that statement makes absolutely no sense to me. Think about it. The world would have been in total darkness following sunset, on any day, and Sabbath (Shabbat) ends with sunset. Really, three ladies, without male accompaniment, out shopping in the dark (after sunset) on a Saturday night? Is it possible? Absolutely! Do I still believe it’s highly unlikely? Also, absolutely yes, I do.

Now consider the implications of a Wednesday Crucifixion, followed by a Special High (Passover) Shabbat / Sabbath on the Thursday, which would have begun with sunset on the Wednesday. Said Special Shabbat would have ended with sunset on the Thursday. This would not only have allowed the ladies time, Mark 16:1, during daylight hours on the Friday, to go shopping, gather… and also prepare, Luke 23:56, the necessary oils, spices and ointments for anointing the Lord Jesus’ now dead human body resting in the tomb, and still honour a regular Saturday Sabbath (Seventh Day Shabbat)!

According to Scripture, Christ died sometime after three pm on the day of the Crucifixion, and was removed from the Cross sometime before six pm (sunset) on the day of the Crucifixion. - Matthew 27:46 - 50, Mark 15:33 - 37, Luke 23:44 - 47 & John 19:28 - 30 and Matthew 27:57, Mark 15:42 - 45, Luke 23:50 - 53 & John 31 - 38.

* if this day (the day of the Crucifixion) was a Wednesday, then

* 24 hours later we would have One Day and One Night - and we’d be near Thursday’s, day’s end, between three pm six pm (sunset) on the day after the Crucifixion. One Day... the first Sabbath (of this Feast of Passover Week), or Special Sabbath, would be drawing to a close - Thursday.

* 24 hours after that we have an accumulation of Two Days and Nights - and we’d be near Friday’s, day’s end, between three pm six pm (sunset) on the day, two full days (and nights), after the Crucifixion. Two Days... The “Shopping Day” would be drawing to a close - Friday, and

* Yet one more period of 24 hours later we’d have accumulated Three Days and Nights - and we’d be near Saturday’s, day’s end, between three pm six pm (sunset) on the day, three full days, (and nights) after the Crucifixion, Three Days... the second Sabbath, or regular Seventh Day Sabbath, would be drawing to a close - Saturday.

Reading what we can in the Gospels, beginning with Matthew 12:40, Jesus very expressly says - "just as .... Three Days, and Three Nights..."

Mark 16:1 tells us that the ladies, after the Sabbath was over, went out shopping for spices, oils and ointments to anoint the Lord's dead body. See also Luke 23:54 - 56, especially verse 56 where we read - “Then they went home and prepared spices and ointments to anoint his body. But by the time they were finished the Sabbath had begun, so they rested as required by the law.”. - NLT

With all the above, about today being “The Shopping Day” aside, let’s not lose sight of what is vital, or truly exegetical, which is this:

Christ was born (G-d did become a man, become Incarnate)

Christ Has DIED,

Christ IS Risen, and

Christ WILL come again, PERIOD!

* The Shopping Day - I’ve irreverently dubbed today, “The Shopping Day”, primarily because I cannot think of anything better to describe the day wherein, according Mark 16:1, three ladies, namely Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome, went Shopping for burial spices, oils and ointments to anoint the Lord's body!

** A good friend’s (Pastor Tim Thomas of “The Shift Downtown) Pastor and Mentor, Mr. Bob (Preacher Bob) Nash, has said that - “Jesus was likely born as early as 7 BC, crucified on a Wednesday, and died in A.D. 33”. Though Preacher Bob, and I may not 100% agree on the 7 BC through A.D. 33 points, four points on this subject we do agree on are:

i) - Jesus was born…

ii) - Jesus was arrested, was beaten, was crucified and did die,

iii) - Jesus is Resurrected, and

iv) - Jesus has promised to once again return to, and for, His people

Day Eighty-one (c) of Eighty-four:

On this day* (tradition says it was a Friday, we call that “Good Friday”*), between the ninth and twelfth hours (the hours of 3:00 o’clock pm and 6:00 o’clock pm) some c.~ One Thousand Nine Hundred Ninety-one (+/- six) years ago, the LORD Jesus the Christ / Yeshua Ha Mashiach (Rabbi Yeshua bar Yosef) after suffering a lengthy bout of torture and abuse, followed by the anguish of hours for the crucifixion has now died. To steal a line from Mr. Carmen Domenic Licciardello’s, known by his fans simply as Carman

Many, perhaps MOST, had high expectations that Jesus the Christ was going to righteously vanquish all of Israel’s enemies. Sadly, even those who walked, lived, ate, breathed and even slept in Christ’s presence (and did so for at least three years) missed the poignancy of the “suffering Messiah” prophecies from TaNaKh. So there He was, this “King of kings”, or “King of the Jews”… dead. And the Day of Preparation, that is the day before a special Shabbat, during Passover, is just hours away from being completed. The Disciples had only limited time with which to get Jesus’ body down from where He was crucified, and properly bury the body.

A man named Joseph of Arimathea, a well-respected member of the Council, sought out Pilate for Christ’s body. Once Pilate had confirmed that Jesus was in fact dead, he granted Joseph the corpse. Joseph bought a linen shroud, and wrapped Jesus’ body in the linen, and then laid Jesus body in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock. A stone was rolled against the entrance of the tomb. Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses, witnessed the sealing of the tomb.

Pilate, being very well aware of the stories of pending Resurrection, fearing that body snatchers might steal Jesus’ now dead human body, posted guards by the tomb entrance, directing them - “…make the tomb as secure…”. These soldiers understood the extreme serious gravity of this situation. If they allowed Jesus’ body to be stolen, it would mean their own - EXECUTION. This tomb guard was very, very serious business.

Now, back to the whole point of why the body had to be removed from the cross, before sunset. The day following the Day of Preparation is a Special, or Feast Day, Sabbath, or Shabbat. For this reason, tomorrow’s continuation of the series, will not be posted until Friday, March 30^th. The rationale for this is for me to, at least in part, honour this Special Shabbat Thursday in memory, meditation and awe, of what Christ our Lord went through in the last c.~ 150 hours (six or so days) of His life. - Matthew 27:57 - 66, Mark 15:42 - 47, Luke 23:50 - 55 and John 19:38 - 42

Day Eighty-one (b) of Eighty-four:

On this day* (tradition says it was a Friday, we call that “Good Friday”*), between the sixth and ninth hours (the hours of 12:00 o’clock noon and 3:00 o’clock pm) some c.~ One Thousand Nine Hundred Ninety-one (+/- six) years ago, the LORD Jesus the Christ / Yeshua Ha Mashiach (Rabbi Yeshua bar Yosef) while hanging on that cross, barely able to even breathe any longer, the whole earth was dark. We read yesterday of a man, one whom some traditional churches have names Dismas, was told by Jesus that - “Today you will be with Me in paradise”. - Luke 23:43

Around the midafternoon Jesus cried out, from the depths of His being, loudly - “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you abandoned (or forsaken) me?” Jesus said this in fulfillment of Psalm 22:1, because, as we read in Galatians 3:13, He (Christ) - “…redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us…”. Did you catch that? Jesus literally became a curse for us. See also II Corinthians 5:21, where we read - “G-d made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of G-d.” Again, Did You catch that? Jesus, who had no sin, was made to be sin for us, so that in Him, we might become the righteousness of God! Wow… that’s amazing grace.

You see, in spite of Jesus having done not even one lone thing, ever, to even slightly hinder, let alone remove, the favor of G-d the Father in His life (He was, after all, G-d’s own Son - Holy, harmless, undefiled, and obedient, blameless in every way, indeed G-d still loved Him and He’d done absolutely NOTHING wrong), our Father G-d, and Heaven, is Holy. In those fleeting moments, as the Lord Jesus expressed His feelings of total abandonment, because G-d placed all of the sins of the entire world squarely on His Son’s shoulders. The world’s evil men were allowed to do whatever they wanted to Jesus, thus Jesus, for a time, felt the despair and aguish of having absolutely NO conscious awareness of His Father’s presence. This may still seem rather abstract, but remember two things: A) - “G-d’s ways are not our ways” - Isaiah 55:8, and B) - “We know, right now, only in part. One day, we will see (understand) fully.” - I Corinthians 13:12

Moments later, approaching the 6^th hour (3:00 o’clock pm), Jesus cried out boldly in a loud voice, and then He gave up His ghost. At that very moment The Temple veil was torn in two, from top to bottom, there were earthquakes (like none had seen before, or since) and tombs, containing the bodies of many holy people (saints of G-d) who had died in the past, were broken open. The saints of old, who were raised to life, all exited their tombs, after Jesus’ resurrection, and were seen by many people, as the resurrected ventured out into the city. It must have been mayhem. Those at the scene, even the very soldiers who nailed the hands and feet of Jesus cried out - “Surely he was the Son of God!”

Upon finding Jesus already dead, instead of breaking His legs (as was the custom of the day), the soldiers charged with Jesus’ execution pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a strong flow of blood and water. This was done both as a fulfilment of Exodus 12:46, Numbers 9:12 & Psalm 34:20 - “…not one of His will be broken…”, and also of Zechariah 12:10 which says - “They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn…”. And with that, we are brought up about the sixth hour (3:00o’clock pm), Jesus has died, the Disciples are in shock, and His followers NEED to get His body off the cross, and properly buried within the next three hours. - Matthew 27:45 - 56, Mark 15:33 - 41, Luke 23:44 - 49 and John 19:28 - 37

And that right there ^ ^ ^ that, my friends, is… from a purely human perspective, perhaps the second darkest hour, to date, in human history!
