Incarnation to Resurrection
Incarnation to Resurrection roughly three and one-half
years, in 12 weeks, Sunday through Friday (six days) per week
Day Seventy-nine of Eighty-four:
Today we read again about the denial of Jesus by Peter,
Matthew 26:69 - 75, Mark 14:66 - 72 & John 18:25 - 27, wherein we read that
Peter - “…began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, “I do not know this
man of whom you speak.” And that “…immediately the rooster crowed a second
time.” Wherein “…Peter remembered how
Jesus had said to him, ‘Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three
times.’ And he broke down and wept.”
Note here, Peter did not just simply ‘deny’ knowing who the Christ was. According to Mark’s Gospel account, Peter “invoked
a curse”, or swore an oath, that he did not even know this Jesus of Nazareth. Now, are these accounts intended to prove
that Peter, later wrote Epistles (letters) of I & II Peter, never actually
met Jesus? That Peter’s claims to have
lived, breathed and supped with our Lord is a ruse? NO!
Are these things recorded to suggest the Bible, or G-d, somehow endorses,
or even encourages deception? Again NO! Why then are these very embarrassing things
written about Peter in THE Holy Bible?
The answer, in my humble opinion is this: A) - to show that Human was a flawed human,
just like you and me. And B) - to show
that G-d looks to the depths of a man’s heart.
Peering through and past our weaknesses, and that in spite of one’s
flaws, Romans
3:23, one can have pure right standing with G-d,
Romans
10:9 - 10 & Ephesians 2:8 - 10, because John 3:16! All of this about Peter’s denial may very
well beg the question - “what about Judas”?
I mean - “Did he not too betray, and even essentially deny Jesus also?” He did, and that brings us to Matthew
27:3 - 10.
Sadly, we read
that Judas hanged himself, and Scripture seems to paint a very glib picture of,
and for, Judas’ eternal future. Judas not
only denied, and even betrayed Jesus, but he effectively sold his own soul to
the devil. The Chief Priests,
whom Judas had betrayed Jesus to, took the 30 pieces of silver Judas had thrown
back at them, and bought a piece of land.
The land was dubbed the “the Field of Blood”, because it was bought with
the blood-money (which was returned to the Chief Priests by Judas) which was
used to pay-off Judas to betray Jesus in the first place - Matthew 27:3 -
10.
At the first light of
dawn Jesus was bound, having been beaten the night before by the High Priest
and their Council, and sent off to Pilate, and even to king Herod. Here we read of Jesus being asked, by Pilate,
“What is Truth?” (John 18:38),
and of Herod
seeking some miraculous sign from Jesus (Luke 23:8). And we also read one of the older formal
accounts that I am aware of, where two persons, Pilate and Herod, once at odds with each
other, become great friends, united by their common enemy… Jesus. - Matthew 27:1 -
2, Luke 23:6 - 16 & John 18:28 - 38
With that we’ll wrap-up
today, at least in terms of the focus of today’s reading. This brings us to about half way through the
last full day of Jesus life on Earth. In
the traditional Churches this day is sometimes nicknamed “Maundy Thursday”, and
we’ll talk more about it, and a few other subjects like “not losing sight of
Christ Crucified”, and some of the “Exegetics on the Crucifixion, Death and
Resurrection of Christ” later this week, Friday. Also,
later this week, likely on Friday, we’ll offer a few more details about why Jesus may not have been crucified
on a Friday, but instead on a Wednesday.
A good friend’s (Pastor Tim
Thomas of “The Shift Downtown) Pastor and
Mentor, Mr.
Bob (Preacher Bob) Nash, has said that - “Jesus was likely born as early as 7
BC, crucified on a Wednesday, and died in A.D. 33”. Though Preacher Bob, and I may not
100% agree on the 7 BC through A.D. 33 points, four points on this subject we
do agree on are:
i) - Jesus was born…
i) - Jesus was born…
ii) - Jesus was
arrested, was beaten, was crucified and did die,
iii) - Jesus is
Resurrected, and
iv) - Jesus has
promised to once again return to, and for, His people
As we close today, let’s ponder the beatings Jesus physically endured since His betrayal, likely on a Monday by one of His closest ‘friends’, Judas through the night, to about halfway through this Maundy Day (likely Tuesday, in my humble opinion, of A.D. 27, nearly two full thousand years ago) at the hands of Chief Priests (religious leaders) and of Pilate and Herod (the sovereigns of the region, in Jesus’ day). And then reflect on - Isaiah 53:5 - “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed” - KJV! See also Romans 4:25, I Corinthians 15:3 and especially I Peter 2:24 - wherein, in I Peter we read - “…by whose stripes ye were healed.” - KJV or “By his wounds you have been healed.” - ESV

Why? Simple, because that right there ^ ^ ^ that, my friends, is… GOOD

“No Jesus, NO peace” and yet, “Know Jesus, KNOW peace”
How does one get to “know” Jesus? Simple, invite Him into your heart, as Jesus
says: “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and
opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.” [Revelation 3:20 NIV]
How can be assured that this Jesus stuff means anything? Well because the Bible tells us so, as the
Apostle Paul wrote:
“If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is
Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be
saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it
is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.” [Romans 10:9-10 NIV]
And for those of you who say to me, I
can’t be bothered reading the Bible, “it’s confusing” or “it’s a waste of my
time”, may I draw your attention to what the Bible says about wisdom: “The fear
of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is
understanding.” [Proverbs 9:10 NIV]
If nothing else, PLEASE read two chapters
from the Bible – (don’t own one, sorry NO excuse, if you’re reading this, you
can access this: http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John%203:16&version=NIV) John 3 and John
14!
John 3:16 says: “For God so loved the
world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not
perish but have eternal life.”
And John 14:6 says: “Jesus answered, “I am
the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through
me.”
