Incarnation to Resurrection, Day Forty-three

Incarnation to Resurrection

Incarnation to Resurrection roughly three and one-half years, in 12 weeks, Sunday through Friday (six days) per week

Day Forty-three of Eighty-four:

Last week on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday we read about Jesus Feeding the Five Thousand, from the perspective of John (last Sunday’s reading from Blog Thirty-six), Matthew & John (this past Monday’s reading with Blog Thirty-seven) and from Mark (this past Tuesday’s reading in Blog Thirty-eight), and today we’ll read about Jesus Feeding the Four Thousand from the perspectives of  Matthew & Mark.  We can spend a few moments comparing some of the differences between the Feeding of the Five Thousand and the Feeding of the Four Thousand, from Mark’s (Mark 6:30 - 44 & Mark 8:1 - 10) perspective a little later.

For now, we’ll first look at both Matthew 16 & Mark 8 and some of the continuing demands for signs.  We first looked in Matthew 12:38 - 42 and the Demand for a sign, “The Sign of Jonah” (by way of the “The Sign of Jonah”, Matthew 12:38 - 42 & Luke 11:29 - 32 talked about back on February 1st with Twenty-six is, in my opinion, one of the more poignant explanations by Jesus on both Signs N’ wonders, and on End Times prophesy there is) and we’ll explore some subsequent “Demands for sign” in today’s reading.

Let’s now take a look now at a few of the differences, the number of fish and loaves of bread to begin with, left over after the feast, and the reaction, or response, of the people fed, between the account of the Feeding of the Five Thousand and the record of the Feeding of the Four Thousand, apart from the obvious 5,000 vs 4,000.  In the Feeding of the Five Thousand we read that they had “five loaves and two fish”, Matthew 14:17, Mark 6:38 & John 6:9 in order to feed Five Thousand people.  Whereas we read that they had “Seven, and a few small fish”, Matthew 15:34 & Mark 8:5 – 7, for feeding Four Thousand people.  Further, we read that there were twelve baskets full of broken pieces of bread and left-over fish, Matthew 14:20, Mark 6:43 & John 6:13, after Feeding Five Thousand people.  And that there were seven baskets full of broken pieces, Matthew 15:37; Mark 8:8, after Feeding Four Thousand people.  Also noteworthy here is that after the Feeding of the Five Thousand, the crowds determined that Jesus is “indeed the Prophet who is to come”, John 6:14, while in the Feeding of the Four Thousand, there is no such reaction or response noted.

Today in Luke we read of Peter’s Confession that Jesus is the Christ, Luke 9:18 – 20.  And we’ll also see a teaser in Luke about Jesus foretelling His soon coming death.

And though the world does not understand that, that right there ^ ^ ^ that, my friends, is… GOOD NEWS!

We’ll leave reading the rest of the text for you individually.

I’ve taken the liberty of assembling a weekly chart of daily readings to cover the chronology

“No Jesus, NO peace” and yet, “Know Jesus, KNOW peace”

How does one get to “know” Jesus?  Simple, invite Him into your heart, as Jesus says: “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.” [Revelation 3:20 NIV]  How can be assured that this Jesus stuff means anything?  Well because the Bible tells us so, as the Apostle Paul wrote:

“If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.” [Romans 10:9-10 NIV]

And for those of you who say to me, I can’t be bothered reading the Bible, “it’s confusing” or “it’s a waste of my time”, may I draw your attention to what the Bible says about wisdom: “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” [Proverbs 9:10 NIV]

If nothing else, PLEASE read two chapters from the Bible – (don’t own one, sorry NO excuse, if you’re reading this, you can access this: http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John%203:16&version=NIV) John 3 and John 14!

John 3:16 says: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

And John 14:6 says: “Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
