Demanding BCV
Many people today, if not outright demand Book, Chapter and Verse (BCV) citations,
certainly do insist on a BCV citations. Perhaps this is a not only a good, but indeed
a great, thing. There are available for
us today several versions of the Bible in audio online and other electronic
media, not to mention the apps on our “smartphones” with the Bible. Thus, the very idea of someone saying – “The
Bible says ______.” – without offering a citation seems weak, at best.
On the subject of the Bible in audio online, this is a
great thing. I so struggle with reading,
I really do... Grasping concepts, picking up nuances even ‘seeing the Big
Picture’ etc., often are so much better & clearer w/audio – visuals. Yet... I can't stand YouTube answers. You
know, ask someone a question, and said someone posts a YouTube video to
"explain" it all... I find far
too many folks are using YouTube to preach (teach) saying way too many things
colloquially, and not near enough soundly backed up with any citations. How
many times have you heard someone say:
"The Bible says, 'G-d loves a cheerful
giver'..."
"The Bible says, 'cleanliness is next to
godliness'..." or
"The Bible says for us, 'to be a Jew to the Jews,
and a Greek to the Greeks'..." ??
The first is a direct, verbatim, quote from II Corinthians 9:7 (and it’s verbatim across
numerous English translations). The
second one appears, not even as an inference, nowhere in the 66 Books of Canon! Although, depending on how one chooses to
respond to information on this quote, it can be argued that it has a sound Biblical
basis, or just as soundly shown to be completely ungodly as well as
unscriptural. I’ll leave this one for
you to draw your own conclusions on. And
then the third is a sort of paraphrasing of I
Corinthians 9:20 – 22 (again, across numerous English translations).
Many people are lightning quick to demand BCV (book,
chapter & verse) for myriad claims expressed. And again, this is indeed a great thing. But, as a good friend Mr. Roland Hildebrant
and I talked about earlier this year, many things in our Christian walk and
faith, have no direct, verbatim, BCV to cite. The Trinity, the Earth being about
c.~ 6k years old, and even Deity of Christ are three such examples. This
absence of BCV does not make those, or other concepts / sayings ungodly or even
unscriptural, necessarily. It merely
means that a simple, straight forward, word-for-word, verbatim Scriptural
explanation may not exist, yet the concept(s), certainly of the three (3) noted
above, are both Godly and Scripturally sound. Some of the BCV demands hinge on variations of
English Translations, some hinge on individual biases, brought into the study.
The phunnie (yes, I spelled funny incorrectly on
purpose, made you take note!) thing about translations, especially Biblical translations
at least for me, is that all translations,
apart from the original Greek for the New Testament, and original Hebrew for TaNaKh[1]
the Old Testament, are nothing more than man's best imagined ideal
transliteration of the originals. I believe that G-d's (Christ's) Divine
Providence and Sovereignty protects His Word, so that despite man’s flaws &
biases His Word remains true. Ergo, we have dozens of English renderings, some
are more like very loose paraphrases, others attempt to be word-for-word
translations, while still others attempt a more thought-for-thought
transliteration.
I'm not sure I could reliably cite which is which, nor
do I care. What matters is that materially, from Genesis to Revelation, across
myriad English renderings (including but not limited to, KJV, HCSB, NIV, ESV,
TLV, CJB, MSG, AMPC etc.) they all carry The GOOD NEWS of G-d’s purpose and
plan of redemption, from the Incarnation through to the arrest, torture, death,
burial, Resurrection and promised return of - Jesus the Christ / Yeshua Ha
Mashiach (Rabbi Yeshua bar Yosef)!
Shalom!
“No Jesus, NO peace” and yet, “Know Jesus, KNOW peace”
How does one get to “know” Jesus? Simple, invite Him into your heart, as Jesus
says: “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and
opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.” [Revelation 3:20 NIV]
How can be assured that this Jesus stuff means anything? Well because the Bible tells us so, as the
Apostle Paul wrote:
“If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is
Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be
saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it
is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.” [Romans 10:9-10 NIV]
And for those of you who say to me, I
can’t be bothered reading the Bible, “it’s confusing” or “it’s a waste of my
time”, may I draw your attention to what the Bible says about wisdom: “The fear
of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is
understanding.” [Proverbs 9:10 NIV]
If nothing else, PLEASE read two chapters
from the Bible – (don’t own one, sorry NO excuse, if you’re reading this, you
can access this: http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John%203:16&version=NIV) John 3 and John
14!
John 3:16 says: “For God so loved the
world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not
perish but have eternal life.”
And John 14:6 says: “Jesus answered, “I am
the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through
me.”
